Tujunga, Calif. – Following a short break after a successful race outing in Canada, Competition Motorsports is ready to be back in action this weekend at Road America. It will be a busy weekend for the team, with key championship points in play as the series stages Rounds 10, 11 and 12 of the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge USA Presented by Yokohama.
After two 45-minute sprints around the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park circuit in Bowmanville Ontario, Competition Motorsports brought home a slew of positive finishes to keep in championship contention as the Porsche GT3 series turns to the second half of the 2014 season.
In addition to a packed weekend at Road America, Competition Motorsports will also have a full paddock with a six-driver lineup.
In Platinum Class Competition David Calvert-Jones will take on the field in his No. 12 Wheels Up-Competition Motorsports Porsche 911 along with Michael Lewis in his No. 98 Competition Motorsports/Curb-Agajanian Porsche 911.
Calvert-Jones, who will also race a Porsche in IMSA TUDOR championship action on Sunday, is currently third in the Platinum Class Masters category, while young Lewis is third in the overall Platinum Championship battle as he continues to impress in his rookie season of Porsche GT3 competition.
The team will also have four drivers competing in Gold Class competition with Competition Motorsports regulars Fred Poordad in the No. 02 Affinity Motorsports/TLI/Competition Motorsports Porsche 911.and Blair Chang in his No. 9 The Agency/Competition Motorsports Porsche 911.
Poordad is but 22 points behind the lead in Gold Cup competition, while Chang is currently in the top-10 in championship standings despite running a select schedule of races.
Making their IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge debut this weekend will be Steve Goldman in the No. 3 Revita Rugs/Competition Motorsports Porsche 911, and Michael Zuieback in the No. 2 Discount Tire/Competition Motorsports Porsche 911. Both Goldman and Zuieback have competed with the team in Pirelli Cup events, and this will both mark their first start in IMSA Cup Competition here in Road America.
With at least one driver on the podium in every single round of competition since the season-opener in Sebring, Competition Motorsports looks to continue their podium streak around the 4-mile, 14-turn Road America circuit.
The drivers bring a variety of experience to the tricky circuit. Lewis arrives ready to tackle the course in a Porsche for the first time as the last time he competed at the track was in a Formula BMW machine.
Poordad returns to Road America with starts in the last two years of competition, ready to score a positive result, while Calvert-Jones remembers his double-podium at the track in GT3 competition in 2012.
“This is a big weekend for the team and we are already feeling at home at Road America having run in Pirelli Cup there last weekend,” said team principal Bob Faieta. “Three races in one weekend will be a challenge for all the drivers and being clean as possible will be very important, particularly in the first two rounds. There are a lot of points we can grab this weekend and thats going to be our goal for everyone. ”
The team will have two practice sessions ahead of qualifying on Saturday at 8:00 AM (ET). Race 1 will go green at 6:05 PM (ET). Race 2 will go green Sunday at 9:50 AM (ET) with Race 3 following shortly at 4:45 PM (ET).
